L’ultima fermata

La tramvia scricchiolava lungo i binari deserti di Milano.ⓘThe tram creaked along the deserted tracks of Milan. Erano le due di notte e solo un passeggero restava a bordo.ⓘIt was two in the morning and only one passenger remained on board.

L’uomo sui settanta anni si alzò lentamente e si avvicinò all’autista.ⓘThe man in his seventies stood up slowly and approached the driver. «Sa, guidatore, questa è l’ultima corsa della mia vita», disse con voce serena.ⓘ“You know, driver, this is the last run of my life,” he said with a serene voice. L’autista lo guardò attraverso lo specchietto, sorpreso ma non spaventato.ⓘThe driver looked at him through the mirror, surprised but not frightened. «Perché dice così?»ⓘ“Why do you say that?” «Perché alla prossima fermata scendo e non tornerò più. Ho capito che la felicità non è una destinazione, ma il modo in cui si viaggia».ⓘ“Because at the next stop I get off and I will not return. I have understood that happiness is not a destination, but the way one travels.”

Quando la tramvia si fermò, l’uomo scese sorridendo e l’autista ripartì con gli occhi lucidi.ⓘWhen the tram stopped, the man got off smiling and the driver drove off with shining eyes.
