Privacy policy
Last updated: 1 November 2026
We collect as little as we can and never sell your data. This page explains what we store, why, and who helps us process it.
What we collect
- Account data: username, email, password (stored only as a secure hash), and what you choose to add — display name, photo, bio, country, city, birth year, interests, goals, native and learning languages, time zone.
- Learning data: texts you open and finish, words you look up and save, flashcard reviews, XP, streaks and badges.
- Content: posts, journals, corrections, comments, forum messages, votes, suggestions, reviews, services and orders, and private messages.
- Technical data: a hashed (not raw) form of your IP address for rate limiting and abuse prevention, basic server logs, and AI usage counters.
Why we use it
- To run the service: show your texts at the right level, keep your flashcards and progress, deliver messages and notifications.
- To match you with language partners (languages, interests, goals, time zone, recent activity).
- To keep FasterLang safe: rate limits, spam and abuse prevention, moderation of reported content.
- To send emails you need (login links, password resets, security notices) and — if you allow it — activity notifications.
Who processes data for us
- Amazon Web Services (Amazon SES) sends our emails. It receives your email address and the email content.
- xAI (Grok API) generates texts, translations and explanations. It receives the text being analysed — e.g. the word you tapped and its sentence, or your request for a new story — and the explanation language. We do not send your name, email or profile to xAI. Please don’t type personal information into story requests.
- Our hosting provider stores the database and files.
- Google Fonts serves the site fonts; your browser requests them from Google’s servers.
What other people can see
Your public profile (username, display name, photo, bio, country, languages, interests, level, badges and public posts) is visible to everyone. Your email, birth year, city (unless you add it to your bio), time zone details, flashcards and private messages are not public.
Cookies
We use only essential cookies: a session cookie (flsess), a “remember me” login cookie (fl_token, one year) and, for visitors, a language preference. No advertising or third-party tracking cookies.
How long we keep data
As long as your account exists. Sent emails are purged from our queue after 60 days; rate-limit records after 2 days. When you delete your account we delete your profile, photo, flashcards, reading history, XP, badges and notifications immediately; content you posted publicly stays, attributed to “Deleted member”.
Your rights
You can see and edit most of your data in Settings, turn off notification emails, and delete your account at any time. To request a copy of your data or ask any privacy question, email palmies@pm.me. If you are in the EU/UK you may also complain to your data protection authority.
