Beijing's winter nights are always cold and silent, especially after the Forbidden City closes its gates. Old Li has been keeping night watch here for over thirty years; he is familiar with the whisper of every brick and tile. On a stormy night, as he patrolled with his lantern as usual, he suddenly noticed a faint light coming from the direction of the Hall of Mental Cultivation. His heart tightened; he hurried closer and saw a young figure in a Qing dynasty dragon robe standing by the window, gazing at the pitch-black night sky and sighing softly.
老李头揉揉眼睛,那身影却渐渐淡去,只留下一句低沉的话语在风中回荡:“朕终究还是没能守住这片江山……”Old Li rubbed his eyes, but the figure gradually faded away, leaving only a deep, low voice echoing in the wind: "In the end, I still could not protect this empire..."
From that day on, Old Li understood: history is never cold text, but rather the regret and dignity that live in every echo.
