Every year when the twelfth month arrives, I return to my hometown. That night the sky was clear and a gentle breeze was blowing. Grandmother was sitting waiting on the small wooden bridge, holding a krathong in both hands.
“ปีนี้หลานทำกระทงเองหรือ”ยายถามยิ้ม“Did you make the krathong yourself this year?” Grandmother asked with a smile. I nodded and sat down beside her. “ยายคะทำไมเราต้องลอยกระทงทุกปี”ฉันถาม“Grandma, why do we have to float a krathong every year?” I asked.
Grandmother gazed at the river where tiny krathongs were floating away. “เพื่อระลึกถึงพระแม่คงคาและขอขมา”ยายตอบเบา“To remember the Goddess of the river and to ask for forgiveness,” she answered softly. “และเพื่อปล่อยสิ่งที่หนักใจให้ลอยไปกับกระแสน้ำ”“And to let the things weighing on our hearts float away with the current.”
I smiled and lit the candle on my own krathong. The candlelight flickered and reflected on the water’s surface. That night I finally understood why this tradition still endures.
