At the end of summer, I returned to my family home for the first time in twenty years.

The old well at the back of the garden was still there.

As a child, I believed I could hear my grandmother's voice from the dark bottom of this well and was too scared to approach it.

Now, I mustered up the courage and opened the lid. There, carefully carved on the inner wall, letters jumped into view. 怖いこわいものを覗きのぞき続けつづけなさい」“This is the well of your heart. Keep peering at the things that scare you.” It was my grandmother’s handwriting.

The well was not merely a hole in stone; for me, it remained a special place that still carried my grandmother’s living voice.
