On the night I returned home for the first time in years, the sound of the festival reached my ears. When I opened the window, I saw people in yukata walking under the soft glow of paper lanterns.
Suddenly, my smartphone vibrated. It was a message from my childhood friend Takuya. 昔の約束、覚えてる?」"I'm waiting in front of the shrine. Do you remember our old promise?"
My heart began to pound. Ten years ago, in the same place, he had said to me: 「来年も、再来年も、ずっと一緒に花火を見よう」"Next year, and the year after, let's always watch the fireworks together."
The time had finally come to fulfill that promise.
