La lanterne oubliée

Sous un ciel d’encre zébré d’éclairs, je foulais les ruelles étroites du village de Takayama où se déroulait la fête d’Obon.ⓘUnder an inky sky streaked with lightning, I was treading the narrow alleys of the village of Takayama where the Obon festival was taking place.

Les lanternes de papier flottaient comme des âmes errantes le long du sentier menant au temple.ⓘThe paper lanterns floated like wandering souls along the path leading to the temple.

Soudain, une petite lanterne rouge oubliée dans l’herbe attira mon regard ; sa flamme vacillante semblait m’appeler.ⓘSuddenly, a small red lantern forgotten in the grass caught my eye; its flickering flame seemed to be calling me. Je la ramassai avec précaution et découvris un nom calligraphié : « Aiko ».ⓘI picked it up carefully and discovered a name written in calligraphy: “Aiko”. Une vieille femme apparut alors, les yeux brillants de larmes contenues.ⓘAn old woman then appeared, her eyes shining with held-back tears. « C’était la lanterne de ma petite-fille, murmura-t-elle.ⓘ“It was my granddaughter’s lantern,” she murmured. Chaque année nous la lançons sur la rivière pour qu’elle retrouve le chemin de ses ancêtres, mais cette fois le vent l’avait emportée. »ⓘEvery year we launch it on the river so she can find her way back to her ancestors, but this time the wind had carried it away.”

Ensemble nous descendîmes jusqu’à la rivière et y déposâmes la lanterne rouge qui, cette fois, fila droit vers l’horizon, emportant avec elle un peu de notre humanité partagée.ⓘTogether we went down to the river and placed the red lantern there which, this time, sped straight towards the horizon, carrying with it a little of our shared humanity.
