At the end of summer, I returned to my hometown, a village nestled in the mountain valleys.

On the night of Obon, I tried hanging the paper lantern that my grandmother lit every year, something I hadn’t done in a long time.

Each time the breeze blew, the pale orange light flickered as though it were summoning old memories.

When I suddenly looked up, my grandmother’s figure appeared in the darkness across from me, quietly smiling.

That night I realized the lantern’s flame was not merely a light, but something that continues to illuminate our bonds.
